Religion

bible

A religion is a structured approach to the spirituality of human beings. It covers a set of symbols, narratives, beliefs and practices, which usually have a transcendent and supernatural quality and give meaning to the life experiences of the practitioner through reference to a higher truth or power.

Religion is usually expressed through prayer, meditation, ritual, music and art and participation in a church, temple or synagogue. It could focus on specific metaphysical, supernatural and moral claims on reality such as human nature and the cosmos, yielding a set of religious ethics, laws and a particular lifestyle. It also encompasses cultural and ancestral traditions, history, writings, history and mythology, along with personal fait and religious experiences.

The term “religion” basically refers to two things: the personal practices which are related to communal faith; and the group rituals and communication practices which stem from shared conviction. The term ”religion” is also occasionally used interchangeably with the terms “faith” or “belief system.” However, compared to religion, faith is more defined socially than just personal convictions and a belief system entails specific behaviors.

The development of religion over the years have taken numerous forms in different cultures. Along with historical development and origins, it considers social and psychological roots. However, although diverse in many ways, all religions usually present a similar quality: they believe that the world is divided into two domains, one sacred and the other profane. Here are some of the more popular religions today.

1. Christianity

Christianity centers on the life and the teachings of Jesus Christ, as presented in the Bible’s New Testament. The faith of Christians is essentially the faith in Jesus as the only Christ, who is the son of God and the only Savior and Lord.

Christianity started as a Jewish sect and similar to Islam and Judaism, is also considered as an Abrahamic religion. It originated in the eastern Mediterranean and quickly grew in influence and size over a few decades. By the 4th century, it is the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. Since then, Christianity has played a big role in the development of Western civilization and is the states religion of many countries around the world.

2. Islam

Islam is another Abrahamic religion which originated from the teaching of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet and a 7th century Arab political and religious figure. The term Islam means to submit and surrender oneself totally to God or Allah. Followers of Islam are referred to as Muslims, with the term “Muslim” meaning a person who submits to God. Today, there are around 1.8 billion Muslims all over the world, making it the second largest religion, after Christianity.

3. Judaism

Judaism is one of the oldest religious traditions that is still being practiced today. Its teachings, writings and traditions are the foundations of the Abrahamic religions, influencing Christianity and Islam, along with several other non-Abrahamic religions. Its followers are referred to as Jews. Modern Judaism today believes that central authority is not actually vested in just a single person or a single body, but in religious laws, sacred texts and learned rabbis who are the ones interpreting those laws and texts.
